The dentist will carefully separate the tooth from the gum tissue and ligaments before the socket is thoroughly cleaned and closed. For a surgical extraction, a patient may receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia to minimize pain and discomfort. To remove the tooth, the dentist must surgically cut through the gums and bone with special tools. Sometimes, the dentist must cut the tooth into pieces for an easier extraction. After the tooth is removed, the socket will be cleaned and stitched closed to prevent infection and to promote healing.

After either type of extraction, a blood clot usually forms in the socket of the removed tooth. As a patient heals, he or she should keep the clot clean and watch for any signs of infection. If there’s any discomfort after an extraction, the dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain medication or may prescribe a painkiller. Patients normally will have to stick to a soft food or liquid diet for at least one day after the extraction. In addition, patients should be careful when brushing their teeth to help the socket heal and to avoid disrupting the formed blood clot. The gums and bone usually begin to heal 1 – 2 weeks after the extraction, but it can take a full 6 months before the mouth is completely healed.

If the extraction is considered a medical necessity, most, or at least part, of the cost should be covered by dental insurance. The coverage may vary based on whether it is a simple or surgical extraction.
