About Mouth Guards
When it comes to mouth guards, they are not one-size-fits-all, but instead they must be customized to fit your unique mouth for the greatest benefit. At the practice of Bedford, TX cosmetic dentist, Dr. Scott Staffel, he custom makes mouth guards to be used during a number of sports and activities. Dr. Staffel often creates mouth guards for his patients to use during football, hockey, skateboarding, biking, and more. These highly-durable mouth guards are meant to protect the entire mouth, including the teeth, gums, and jaws. Mouth guards help to reduce stress on the mouth, as well. As compared to store bought guards, custom mouth guards are made from higher quality materials, last longer, and provide overall better protection from accidents and injuries.

What to Expect with Mouth Guards
To begin the process of creating a customized mouth guard, the dentist will first take digital X-rays and impressions to cover every angle of the mouth for the ideal fit. The X-rays and impressions will be sent to the dental laboratory where advanced technology and high-quality materials will be used to create the mouth guard. Once the mouth guard is sent back to the dentist’s office, the patient will come back in so that the dentist can adjust the mouth guard for the best fit and the most comfortable bite. Any needed changes can be made, as well.
Mouth Guards Treatment Aftercare
After the patient has received the mouth guard, the dentist will go over the care instructions and recommended tips to keep the guard in tip-top shape. A patient will learn the best way to clean and store the mouth guard. A patient should bring the mouth guard to all future dental appointments to ensure the fit is still proper, to look for any signs of wear and tear, and to repair or replace as needed. With proper care and use, a mouth guard can last up to 8 years.
Mouth Guards Insurance Coverage
Since a custom mouth guard isn’t typically considered a medical necessity, insurance usually won’t cover the cost. However, our office will still contact your insurance company to confirm your individual benefits. To help make mouth guards more affordable for our patients, we do accept many forms of payment and offer financing plans.
